Introducing our Rector
How exciting to have finally arrived in Tidworth and be able to
introduce myself at the start of this new stage in my ministry.
I grew up in a village in Sussex. My love of the countryside has
never left me and I enjoy regularly escaping the busyness of work
to go walking and have already, with my yellow Labrador called
Layla, been enjoying exploring some new places to walk.
After A-levels, I moved to London to train as a primary school
teacher. My first teaching post was in the East End of London
-quite a challenge but developed in me a heart for working with
In 1990 I went to teach at a school in Kenya for 3 years. I fell in love with Africa-the open space, its people and fantastic scenery. I have since returned a few times for holidays needing to get my ‘Africa-fix’.
On returning to England, I taught in various schools in north London. I loved many aspects of teaching yet knew this wasn’t going to be my work for the rest of my life.
Then 8 years ago God called me to take a step of faith, giving up my job as a deputy head to work part-time so that I could set up a children’s community project run by my local church. This involved bringing the love and hope of Jesus to families on a deprived housing estate through a variety of social-action projects. I loved seeing God change families, bring people to faith and restore a community.
Working on the community project eventually ended up in me offering myself for ordained ministry. After training in Oxford, I moved to Billericay in Essex to complete a 3 year curacy. My time as a curate was a steep learning curve with many exciting opportunities to develop my ministry. There was also more than my fair share of challenges as during my 3 years, all 3 other vicars in the team left-not too sure what I said or did!! I also journeyed through a tough time of personal illness discovering God’s faithfulness and love even in the pits of despair and darkness.
From this post I moved only 20 minutes up the road to Chelmsford where for the past five and a bit years I have been the team Vicar of St Paul’s church. Through my time there I was able to develop strong links with the local schools through leading assemblies, teaching RE lessons and supporting staff and students on a pastoral level. Also within the church setting we ran many holiday clubs and I loved leading the All-Age worship, as well as developing worship for those of mature years.
Hopefully this has given you a brief insight into who your new team rector is. Above all else I am excited about what God will do in the coming years through the church in Tidworth and also through my role as Chaplain of the Wellington
Academy. These two roles seem to me to provide a
great opportunity to serve the community and
develop my passions of school and church working
I look forward to getting to know many people
around Tidworth so do stop and say hello if you see
me around and Layla always loves a little fuss made
of her too!
